This basilica, which houses the Apostle James’ tomb, is one of Europe’s main pilgrimage destinations and one of Spain’s most representative and most visited monuments. Thanks to the guide’s explanations, you will discover all of the cathedral’s secrets and observe the constant alterations and additions that it has experienced down through the centuries.
Its museum and other rooms open to visitors house important collections that will familiarise you with the cathedral’s history and the city’s development.
During the tour you will see archaeological objects and elements from the old cathedral facades, tapestries by masters such as Rubens and Goya, the reconstruction of the old stone choir, works by Master Mateo and a lot more.
You will also enjoy a self-guided tour of the Pazo de Xelmírez, the former bishop’s palace that houses the old Roman Portico, medieval kitchen and 13th-century banquet hall.
You will also be able to discover on your own the Collegiate Church of Sar, an incredible 12th-century Romanesque building that stands out due to its leaning interior pillars, regarding which numerous theories exist: perhaps it was a construction blunder, either as a result of the instability of the terrain (due to the nearby river) or the tall side naves. In this regard, the exterior buttresses help to stop the church from leaning further.
